This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Treatise On Light Christiaan Huygens Books

A brilliant work on the nature of light by Newton's great rival. It goes much farther than "Opticks" in use of the wave nature of light to explain inter alia birefringence. A tour de force.

It is only for those seriously interested in the history of physics however.

Treatise On Light Christiaan Huygens Books Reviews

I am very unhappy with this book, and I haven't even read it yet.

the only other review of this book says "While the book appears to be just a delightful exercise in geometry..."

yet no illustrations. without the illustrations the text explaining the illustrations is useless. it is unacceptable to print this book without the illustrations. its like printing a work of Shakespeare, but only every other word.

I saw a similar review of a reprint of Einsteins theory of relativity. if these books don't contain the diagrams, whats the point? I NEED THE DIAGRAMS - THAT IS WHY I PURCHASE THE BOOK.

why does a publisher do this? to save money? a book about geometry without any geometric diagrams. frustrated. very frustrated.
Treatise of Light by Christian Huygens was published in 1690. The questions about the nature of light, how fast it travels, why it travels at all, and of course the phenomenon of reflection, refraction, birefringence are addressed using geometrical optics. These questions were quite current and poorly understood back then. While the book appears to be just a delightful exercise in geometry, it contains proofs and discussions relevant to ray optics that are used to the day. The book also shows how astute Huygens was as a scientist and as an experimentalist. No wonder his work has survived the test of time, and continues to be relevant to the day. Even though the book contains many ideas that have been discarded in face of modern knowledge, the perspective obtained by reading through Huygens arguments, makes it to worthwhile read.
This is a reprint of the Silvanus P. Thompson English translation of 1912 with the original illustrations.

"This is the book for which Galileo was imprisoned by the Inquisition."

"One of the great scientific classics of the 17th century, this brilliant exposition of the wave theory of light forms the claim to immortality of Christiaan Huygens."

"It was meant to be his great philosophical masterpiece, written for the world at large, but the rarity, unreadability, an inaccuracy of the only English translation (1661) considerably obscured it from view. Then, in 1953, the University of Chicago Press published its distinguished modern version 'a splendid edition [which] provides the modern reader with the opportunity to understand, through the medium of Salusbury's vibrant Jacobean prose, the substance and significance of Galileo's scientific achievements, the power and reach of this mind and the passion and tragedy of his personal history.'"

Hardback with dustjacket, 129 pp.
